sceptics is a community for those who are interested in finding the truth behind urban legends, old wives' tales, common beliefs, or any claims that don't hold up under the weight of critical thought. Any subject is welcome, as long as you can provide valid arguments for your claims, and preferably link the other members to a reliable source that backs up your argument. Discussion on topics is very welcome, but no flaming, personal attacks or pointless comments are allowed. It's also recommended to provide some back-up to your counter-arguments instead of just announcing the other person is wrong, or you will not be taken seriously.

"But the tools of skepticism are generally unavailable to the citizens of our society. They're hardly ever mentioned in the schools, even in the presentation of science, its most ardent practitioner, although skepticism repeatedly sprouts spontaneously out of the disappointments of everyday life. Our politics, economics, advertising, and religions (New Age and Old) are awash in credulity. Those who have something to sell, those who wish to influence public opinion, those in power, a skeptic might suggest, have a vested interest in discouraging skepticism."

--Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World
